about
Raised in a family full of poets, it’s no surprise that Nadia favors introspective and visceral lyrics at the forefront of her music. Conscious lyrics and catchy hooks have gained the Canadian-born musician recognition in Canada and the Brooklyn area in which she now resides. On her debut album, Arrival, Kazmi showed her musical and songwriting prowess with all original songs.
On her latest foray, she hones her musical direction by reinterpreting the songs of one of songwriting’s greatest craftsmen, Leonard Cohen. Leonard Cohen’s songs reached her in a way no others could, and this album was a long time coming. With the help of her friend and co-producer, Uri Djemal, she was finally able to bring the project to fruition. Recorded in New York City, the album retains the grittiness of the city where Cohen spent much time. Where Leonard’s production is sometimes an acquired taste, Nadia’s unique indie approach to Cohen’s songs show her innovative spirit and brings his songs into the contemporary arena of music for new and old fans alike.

Press for Nadia’s Debut Album; Arrival:
“...She also bears out her versatility as a vocalist, affecting both subtlety and raw power with unassuming confidence... With considered, well-crafted lines of imagery and metaphors, Kazmi evokes a rare sense of emotional purpose that makes her music all the more compelling.”
- Donald Gibson, Seattle Post Intelligencer
“...Showcases her powerful vocals on her debut album, Arrival. Nadia sings as if each lyric comes straight from her heart, from her melancholic whispers in Julian to frenzied rock temper tantrums in Tyranny of the Heart.”
- Tiffany Sengsgavang, Youthink, Canada’s Youth Magazine
“The first track only helps to prove the point that this is Nadia Kazmi’s ‘Arrival’ and it is anything but ordinary. It is an intriguing, deep collection full of unpredictability and surprise. It’s like Queen meets Stevie Wonder meets Chantal Kreviazuk meets Regina Spektor.”
- Jessi Rathwell, The Mind’s Eye, Nanaimo, BC
“Nadia has an amazing voice that can hit a low growl or a high girly scream. This lady definitely has something to say and she’ll say it any way she can. Calgary born and raised, Leonard Cohen’s influence is clearly present in her music.”
- Jane Voloboleva, Edmonton Gateway
“Nadia’s powerful voice quickly takes centre stage as she assertively sings... Arrival is a solid debut that showcases Nadia’s lyrical prowess and her taste for a universal soul/rock sound.”
- Jason Gladu, Pop Journalism, Canada’s Media and Pop Journalism Magazine
“Songs like Mother are nicely written... not a stereotypical track you might expect from a pop-rock female artist. Tyranny of the heart gets raw, more rock. Nadia unleashes her chords... she has the promise to be another Canadian gold mine. Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.”
